This Hawaiian word carries a powerful meaning: “to move forward” together. It was not just a call to action but a reminder of unity, perseverance, and shared purpose. When paddlers worked in unison, their canoes would rise and glide effortlessly across the water, carrying their people, culture, and gifts across the oceans.
That same spirit of moving forward through collaboration is one that deeply resonates with us today at UESI.

After many years of competitive outrigger canoe racing, I have experienced firsthand the strength that comes when individuals act as one. When I am in a canoe, I can close my eyes and feel the unified effort of all six crew members. Each paddle dips into the water with perfect timing, pulling the outrigger forward. In those moments, the boat almost sings, harmonizing with the rhythm of the crew and the energy of the ocean.
That harmony is what I envision for us at UESI: a collective effort where every member contributes their strength, skills, and passion to move forward with purpose. Whether it is pushing toward the finish line of a race or navigating toward a distant shoreline, progress comes only when we move together.
