Managing Differential Pressure (Delta P) Hazards

One of the most serious and least understood risks in underwater engineering is differential pressure, commonly referred to as Delta P. When water is forced through a gap, pipe, valve, or intake structure, it can create a suction force strong enough to trap or fatally injure a diver within seconds, often with no visible warning.

Divers working near dams, spillways, water intakes, or pipeline systems follow strict Delta P hazard checklists as part of UESI’s commercial diving safety process. Before any diver enters the water near a potential Delta P zone, the crew implements Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures to physically isolate the hazard: de-energizing pumps, closing valves, and confirming isolation before granting water entry. Decompression Compliance and Dive Planning

When it’s mismanaged, nitrogen buildup in a diver’s bloodstream leads to decompression sickness, commonly known as “the bends, a condition that can cause lasting injury or death. UESI dive supervisors manage this risk by applying strict decompression tables that govern bottom time, ascent rate, and any required decompression stops based on depth and dive duration.

Supervisors use these tables and continuously track elapsed bottom time throughout the operation rather than estimating it after the fact. For repetitive dives within a single work shift, residual nitrogen levels from previous dives are factored into subsequent dive plans, ensuring cumulative exposure never exceeds safe limits.

Equipment Redundancy and Routine Calibration

Commercial diving safety depends as much on equipment integrity as it does on training. UESI maintains a rigorous inspection and calibration schedule for all life-support equipment, including breathing gas supplies, gas blocks, full-face mask regulators, and gauges. Every component that keeps a diver breathing under pressure is tested on a routine schedule and inspected again immediately before use.

Breathing air quality itself is tested at a minimum every 6 months to confirm it meets required purity standards, and any piece of equipment that fails inspection is pulled from service immediately, no exceptions, regardless of project deadlines. This redundancy-first mindset extends to backup systems as well: bailout air, secondary communications, and standby diver equipment are staged and checked before every dive, not held in reserve as an afterthought.

Job Safety Analysis and Pre-Dive Protocols

Before any UESI diving crew enters the water, a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a mandatory commercial diving safety protocol. This process requires the entire dive team: supervisor, divers, tenders, and support staff, to review the specific hazards of that day’s operation, including entanglement risks, contaminated water conditions, marine traffic, and weather.

The dive crew maintains continuous communication throughout the JSA process and the dive itself, with any team member empowered to halt operations if a new hazard is identified.
